Hey people, i could do with a little bit of advice. I have a HP dv6000 laptop which i got for xmas 06 i think, and i'm having a few problems with it, its been running fairly slow, my firefox crashes alot %26amp; the main problem is it will very rarely connect to the internet at my mums (it works perfectly at my dads). My mum and brothers laptops will connect to the internet no bother but mine will either refuse to connect or will disconnect after 2 minutes. I'm wondering if it would repair by resetting my laptop to its 'in box' co dition however....
O
I really don't want to lose ALL my music (it takes ages to organise them on itunes), documents, pictures, videos etc. I'm happy enough with reinstalling my programmes such as msn again (preferably NOT itunes).
So what i really want to know is...
1) how do i repair this internet issue mentioned above
2) is it possible to restore my laptop to original settings BUT keep all my music, itunes, pictures, documents, internet bookmarks etc
3) get rid of all the rubbish thats slowing my computer down such as files still there from old programmes and stuff i do not need. I'm abit wary of uninstaing programmes without knowing the resulting effects

you can backup your firefox settings by uing the plugin ';FEBE';
better format and reinstall xp than restoring...SOLVES MOST OF YOUR PROBLEMS...copy all files in my documents to another drive before formatting
My answer would to rebuild the computer by reloading windows onto it with the installation discs, but before you do that Create a new partition ';for example you would have C:/ drive create a D:/ drive in computer management then copy all of your music etc to that drive, reinstall windows on the C:/ drive then all of you files will still be on D:/ drive. E-Mail me if you need help with doing this, this is the easiest way as you will have a clean installation of windows as it will run faster and will fix all problems with the machine!!
First thing I'd suggest is Google and download CCleaner, install it and run it. Use it to clean your registry, and delete temporary internet files.
Then grab yourself anti-malware (http://www.malwarebytes.org/) and scan your computer.
If you've got a virus scanner, check your computer for viruses. If not, download AVG and use that.
Go through all your files and delete junk you don't want.
Then do a defrag. (Google for help with this).
This is all free, and won't hurt your computer. After you've done this, restart your computer. If it's still got problems and you want to reset it to it's factory condition, I'd suggest buying an external harddrive (they're only around $100), and copying all your files to that, and then restoring your computer.
After this, you can either copy your files from the external harddrive back to the computer, or just leave them on the external harddrive. If you leave them, you'll still be able to access them, although you'll have more space on your laptop.
As for uninstalling programs, don't worry. If it's going to screw up your computer, it probably won't let you uninstall it. =D
well, there are a lot of causes for your laptop to slow down.
it might be an undetected virus? have a technician see it for check up, if it does, then you can have it reformatted if the virus cant be deleted. as for your files, tell your technician to not erase them or you can just save them all in back-ups like cds or usb.
if its not a virus then it might be the memory of your laptop. you can delete programs that you rarely use. if you dont want to, then you can just delete some files that you have no use for too. sometimes photos scar our computer's memory, since there are blogs like MySpace or Multiply and the likes, you can just upload them there. if you really dont want to delete, then i suggest that you upgrade your laptop's memory.
hope i have helped somehow. :)
